This panel describes where you are and what you can see.
Traditionally, the virtual worlds presented in text adventures are moved through using compass directions: North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, and Northwest. Some locations also have exits Up or Down. These directions can be abbreviated to N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW, U, and D, respectively. So instead of having to type GO NORTH, you could just type N.
Exits are indicated in the grey panel, below. Practice moving around until you find the room with the lantern in it.
